The United Nations is seeking a qualified Legal Officer to contribute to the advancement of global peace and justice. This pivotal role involves providing legal expertise, advising on international law, and supporting our mission to uphold human rights.

Location: Geneva (Switzerland)

Responsibilities:

  • Review legal documents, consultations, and correspondence on sensitive matters.
  • Draft replies, policy documents, and official reports, including those associated with international law and human rights
  • Provide legal support on complex issues, including human rights and refugee law.
  • Advise on the implications of international law relating to the UN’s operational jurisdiction
  • Oversee the work of junior legal staff; ensure the legal compliance of office activities.
  • Facilitate effective internal communication among staff and manage external relationships with member states and stakeholder

Qualifications:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in law, preferably in international law, human rights, or related fields
  • Alternatively, candidates with a first-level university degree combined with relevant work experience may also apply
  • Minimum of 5 to 10 years of progressively responsible experience in legal practice, international law, or related areas, with a demonstrated ability to advise on complex legal issues
  • Fluency in English is mandatory; knowledge of French or other UN languages is beneficial
